Active Passive Voice

Active Passive Voice

We usually use a passive sentence for the following reasons :
   It is not important who or what did the action. Example : This castle was built in 1555.
We want to highlight who or what did the action so that we put the actor at the end of the sentence preceded by byExample : This house was built by my grandfather.

Different To Be In Passive Voice

In passive sentences we use different form of to be ( is, am, are, was, were, be, been ) followed by verb III ( the past participle ).  It depends on the tense used in the sentence.  Let’s see the following examples :
  1. am invited to the meeting.
  2. The floor has just been mopped.
  3. The house is being built.
  4. The car was totally damaged.
  5. This thing can be removed.
  6. This laptop has to be upgraded.

Passive Voice In Present Tense ( Simple / Progressive )

Active Sentences
Passive Sentences
She  mops the floor every day.
They do not provide courtesy buses anymore.
He is painting the house.
We always welcome you.

The floor is mopped every day.
Courtesy buses are not providedanymore.
The house is being painted.
 You are always welcome.


 Passive Voice In Past Tense ( Simple / Progressive )

Active Sentences
Passive Sentences
She wrote a letter last night.
I invited John and Grace to the party.
She didn't invite me to the party.
My brother was cleaning the house when I came home.
They were cutting the trees when the police came.

A letter was written last night.
John and Grace were invited to the party.
was not invited to the party.
The house was being cleaned when I came home.
The trees were being cut when the police came.

Passive Voice In Present Perfect Tense ( Simple / Progressive )

I have fulfilled the requirements.
She has sent the letter.
The manager has granted your request. 

The requirements have been fulfilled.
The letter has been sent.
Your request has been granted.

Passive Voice In The Past Perfect Tense

Somebody had removed the rock.
The room had been cleaned before we came here.
 The rock had been removed.

Passive Voice With Modals

Passive Voice With Going To

Passive Voice With Modal + have + Past Participle

Active Sentences
Passive Sentences
I should have told her.
Somebody must have stolen my bike.
She should have been told.
My bike must have been stolen.


Passive Voice With To Infinitive

  1. This problem has to be solved as soon as possible.
  2. She wanted to be left alone.

Passive Voice With get

  1. My sister got offered the job. (=My sister was offered the job.)
  2. Three soldiers got killed. (=Three soldiers were killed.)

Passive Voice Exercise-Determining To Be

In this exercise you have to complete the passive sentences using the correct to be (is, am, are, be, was, were, been).

  1. I told the hotel receptionist I wanted to ..... woken up at 6.00.
