Definition of an Essay

An essay is a group of paragraphs that talk about a certain subject or topic. Normally, an essay has five paragraphs. Nevertheless, some essays have less or more paragraphs. They depend on the purpose or intention of the authors.

Parts of an Essay

An essay has three main parts: an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Each part of an essay has its own role. To make it clear, let's see the following parts of an essay.

An Introduction

An introduction of an essay has a role to provide background information on the topic. It consists of three main points. Let's see the three parts of an introduction.

An Attention Grabber (A Hook)

An attention grabber or  a hook has a role to grab readers's attention. This hook can be one sentence or more. 

Connecting Sentences

After you (the author) grab the readers's attention, you need to write a few sentences so that they are ready to accept or to read your topic sentences or your thesis statement.

Thesis Statement

Your thesis statement is your topic that you are going to write and your opinion or explanation on the topic.
